Question
I need help on this hydraulic problem. Thank you
Derive an expression for the critical hydraulic head for which a column of saturated sediments with
the thickness H will reach ‘quicksand conditions’ (i.e., the effective vertical stress is zero). For simplicity, assume
that the water table is at the sediment surface. Once you derive the formula, calculate how fast groundwater
must flow upward to reach the quicksand conditions assuming a range of hydraulic conductivities characteristic
for fine-grained sands (between 10^-7 and 10^-4 m/s). Assume that the saturated density of sands is 2,000 kg/m^3.
