When a material is deformed if we apply load or penetration of another material then the penetrated material is harder than the sample material. If we measure the penetration then we get the hardness of the sample.

Whereas the elastic moduls is defined as the ratio of amount stress to the strain of the 'Elastic body' also known as youngs modulus.

In the hardness test, if we perform the test with elastic sample and measure the strain and penetration area or indentation area then we get to know the stress and strain then we can be able to find out the Elastic modulus of the material provided the material is elastic material.
