1. Pick one of the questions from the data set.
I will be working with the height data. The heights of students in statistics class in inches is listed below:
57, 59, 60, 62, 63, 64, 65, 65, 66, 67, 68, 68, 68, 68, 69, 69, 70, 71, 71, 72, 72, 72, 74, 75
2. Identify the set. Is it a proportion or mean type of test?
In this set, we are dealing with quantitative continuous data. The data does not meet the conditions for
a binomial distribution (it is not in terms of success or failure); therefore, it would not be a proportion
type of test. We are though doing a hypothesis test of a single population mean u. We will be using the
sample standard deviation to approximate the population standard deviation. This is a mean type of
test.
3. State your claim from the data set.
To make an accurate claim on the data set, I searched the mean heights for adult males and females in
the United States and averaged them out. The data set had approximately half male and half female
students, so this worked out well. I rounded the mean of these two separate heights to be 66.5 inches. I
will be testing whether the mean height of students in statistics class is 66.5 inches.
4. Are you using the normal distribution or Student's t-test?
I will be using the Student's t-test because the sample size is less than 30. We are dealing with a simple
random sample that comes from a population that is approximately normally distributed. We do not
know the value of the population standard deviation, so therefore we would not use the normal
distribution.
5. Analyze the data. Find the appropriate summary statistics.
