A periscope (see figure below) is useful for viewing objects that cannot be seen directly. It can be used in submarines and when watching golf matches or parades from behind a crowd of people. Suppose the object is a distance p1 from the upper mirror and the centers of the two flat mirrors are separated by a distance h.

An eye looks through a periscope to observe a golfer. A vertical cross-section of the periscope is shown, and it consists of a tall rectangle with openings on the lower-right and upper-left vertical sides. There are two mirrors in the periscope: one mirror is angled such that the lower right end of the mirror end is at the bottom-right corner of the rectangle, and the mirror forms about a 45° angle with the bottom of the rectangle, and spans the width of the rectangle; the other mirror is parallel to the first mirror—with the upper left end of the second mirror at the top-left corner of the rectangle—and spans the width of the rectangle. The distance between the centers of the mirrors is h. The eye is looking into the lower-right opening of the periscope. The golfer is at about the same height as the top mirror, and is a horizontal distance p1to the left of the center of the top mirror.
