In elimination reaction two groups or atoms are removed from the reactant resulting in the formation of multiple bonds. Elimination reactions are of two types --- E1 and E2.
Selection of these pathways depends on the nature of the reactants and nature of the base. The E1 pathway proceeds via formation of a carbocation intermediate, so presence of any carbocation stabilizing group favours this pathway. The E2 reaction is a concerted reaction, but to occur this reaction the leaving and the proton should be in anti-periplannar position i.e. the leaving group should present at 180o of the abstracted proton.
