Grain size distributions curves are given for 9 soils in Figures 1, 2 and 3. The Liquid Limit and Plastic Limit for the fine-grained portion of these soils are given in Table 1. a) Classify the soils according to ASTM/USCS (i.e., give both the Group Symbol and Group Name). b) It is proposed that Soil 3 (Figure 2) be used for a highway subgrade. What is the AASHTO soil classification for this soil (see classification table on the last page of this assignment)? What is this soil's general rating as a subgrade?

Expert Solution
Step 1: Soil classification:
  • The soil classification by USCS method is based on the following criteria,
    • Grain size distribution
    • Atterburg's limit
    • Compressibility characteristics
  • The soil is classified as highly organic soil, if the given soil is dark in color and produces a foul smell or unpleasant smell.
  • The soil is classified into fine-grain soil or coarse-grain soil based on the soil passing through the 0.075mm sieve.
  • Less than 50% of the soil is passing through the 0.075mm sieve.
  • So, the soil is classified as coarse grain soil else it is classified as fine-grain soil.
  • Further, the coarse grain soil is classified into gravel and sand, based on the soil passing through the 4.75mm sieve.
  • More than 50% of the soil is passing through the 4.75mm sieve.
  • So, the soil is sandy soil else it is classified as gravel soil.
  • Further, the coarse grain soils are classified as poorly graded soil or well-graded soil based on the co-efficient of curvature and co-efficient of curvature, if the fine content is less than 5%.
  • If the fine content is more than 12%, the gravel and sandy soil is classified with the clay and silt as,
    • Sandy clay
    • Sandy silt
    • Clayey gravel
    • Silty gravel
  • The fine grain soil is classified into clay, silt, or organic soil based on the plasticity index and liquid limit of the soil.
  • Further, the fine-grain soil is classified as low compressible, intermediate compressible, and highly compressible soil based on the liquid limit of the soil.
