Uromastix is a genus of agamid lizards. They are also known as spiny tailed lizards. They are found mostly in rocky and hilly areas of Asia and Africa. They are primarily herbivorous but sometimes they also eat small animals and insects. Their body size ranges between 25 cm to 90 cm. Their body color changes according to the surrounding temperature. They appear lighter in color in cool weather but in warm weather they become dull and dark.
The eyes of Uromastix show some advancement over the eyes of amphibians because of transition from the water to land. The eyelids of Uromastix eyes are movable. Their lower eyelids are more movable than the upper eyelids. Eyelids of Uromastix protect their eyes from heat, dust, and rain. They have a third eyelid that is known as nictiating membrane found in the anterior comer of eye that lies folded below the lower eyelid. It is a double fold of the conjunctiva which is not homologous with that of amphibians.
