The central nervous system of a frog has two parts - Brain and Spinal cord. There are two types of matters present in the nervous system of frog, grey matter and white matter. The outer side of the brain has grey matter while the inner side has white matter. On the other hand, in the spinal cord, the grey matter is present on the inner side and white matter on the outer side.
The brain of a frog is divided into four parts:
- The Prosencephalon: This the anterior part of the brain, called the forebrain and is further subdivided into the Telencephalon and the Diencephalon. The telencephalon is also called the secondary forebrain and is the anterior-most division of the forebrain with its original cavity, telocoel. While the diencephalon is the posterior-most division of the forebrain which is separated from the telencephalon by an imaginary line. The telencephalon has fused neural folds with lamina terminalis in them. This lamina is responsible for the separation of the paired cerebral hemispheres by forming a partition with a longitudinal groove. The telencephalon acts as the embryonic cerebrum whose cavity expands in lateral fashion and gives rise to first (right) and second (left) ventricles. The two telencephalic vesicles are partially far from each other but remain connected by the tubular foramen of Monro that open into the common third ventricle. The third ventricle connects the telocoel and the diocoel. The forebrain comprises of the cerebrum, olfactory lobes.
- The Diencephalon: Also called as Thalamencephalon or Between-brain. The enlarged part that is surrounded by the diencephalon is seen as the diocoel.
