Expert Solution
Step 1

Delta shorthand

For writing the shorthand nomenclature for fatty acids using delta shorthand, following points are to be considered,

1. Number of carbon atoms are to be counted in the fatty acid from the carboxylic acid end.

2. Number of double bonds are to  be counted.

3. Position of the double bond from the carboxylic end.

And is expressed as lipid number i.e. the ratio of number of Carbon atoms (C) and number of double bonds (D) paired with geometrical isomerism around each double bond (i.e. cis or trans) foloowed by Δa bc ,.. ,where, a,b,c,.. represent the position of double bond.i.e. it can be expressed as,

               C:D, cis/trans(for x double bond) -Δx or C:D (x)

Omega Shorthand-

The omega shorthand nomenclature for fatty acid is also similar to delta shorthand, however in case of omega shorthand

(a) The number of carbon atoms are counted from the methyl end instead of carboxylic end.

(b) And in place of delta symbol in delta shorthand, we use omega symbol.

(c) Position of the double bond from the methyl end.

Thus, omega shorthand is expressed  as,   C:D (ω-x) , where x is the position of the first double double bond from methyl end.
