Question

Give some common examples of calcified cartilages.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue that keeps joint motion fluid by coating the surfaces of the bones in the joints and by cushioning the bones against impact. It is not as rigid as bone, but is stiffer and less flexible than muscle tissue.

There are three types of cartilage: hyaline, elastic, and fibrocartilage.

In normal conditions, cartilage does not have calcium in the matrix, instead contains high amounts of chondroitin, which is the material that provides elasticity and flexibility.

Cartilage calcification is a growth process seen in bone with increasing age. This reduces the elasticity of the cartilage and makes it more rigid.
