Girdling is a process by which ________________.
a) plants carry water upward.
b) plants carry nutrients upward.
c) plants carry nutrients downward.
d) a tree is killed by interrupting the passage of phloem sap.
e) a tree is killed by interrupting the passage of xylem sap.

Girdling refers to the complete removal of bark. The xylem and phloem are two circulatory tissues which are used by all vascular plants, including trees, for transport water and nutrients or food. Girdling causes the phloem damaged, this causes stops the leaves from sending sugars to the roots. The xylem is unaffected by this procedure, allowing the tree to continue moving water and minerals from the roots to the leaves.
Death happens when the roots are unable to make ATP and carry nutrients through the xylem. Girdling stops a tree's growth temporarily. Because they will become dehydrated without the sugar synthesis by the leaves sent down, the roots will die first when the bark is removed.
