GEOL2027A: Geology for Civil engineers II Practical 4: Geological maps and the geological history of South Africa [total marks 10] The figure on the next page is a geological map with five rock types (rock V, W, X, Y, Z). These rocks are all sedimentary and were originally deposited horizontally. Rock Z is the oldest rock in the sequence and rock V is the youngest. The dashed lines with associated heights are topographic contours. The next set of questions are designed to help you prepare for constructing a geological cross section from point A to B along the black line on the map. 1.1) 1.2) 1.3) Using a vertical scale of 1cm = 20 meters, draw a topographic cross section along the black line from point A to B (3) Calculate the vertical and horizontal scales of your cross section. (2) What is the resulting vertical exaggeration (2)? Using the vertical exaggeration you calculated above, adjust the dip angles recorded on the map to what their orientation will look like on your cross section. (4) 1.4) Now update your topographic cross section from question 1.1 with the locations of the contacts between the different rock units (3) and add dipping planes using a protractor and the dip angles you calculated in question 1.3 (4). 1.5) Using the above information, complete your cross section by connecting the rock units. Remember, if to use stippled lines if sketching something above Earth's surface (4) 1.6) What geological structures do you now see on this geological cross section (2) and what geological process caused this? (1) 40 60 Rock Y 80 100 120 140 160 180 200 180 0 160 140 120 Rock Z Rock X Rock V Rock W Α. 1 2km J1cm = 200m Strike and dip symbol
