In an absorptive state, the amounts of nutrients are high. It is nothing but a fed state, in which the concentrations of nutrients are flushed into the blood from the gastrointestinal tract. These nutrients are carbohydrates, triglycerides, and amino acids. In carbohydrates, glucose, fructose, galactose are the main compounds, out of which, glucose is the ultimate enzyme fuel. Hence all the carbohydrates are converted into glucose. The excess amount of glucose is stored as glycogen in liver cells.

These are also stored as triglycerides, which are used as energy fuel. In the case of proteins, these are hydrolyzed by the enzyme protease to form amino acids. These amino acids are useful for protein synthesis. The excess amount of amino acids is converted into intermediates of the Krebs cycle. Thus the absorptive state is characterized as an anabolic kind of reaction.
