FURTHER APPLICATIONS Statistics are often employed to argue a point. Later in this course we will examine how statistics can be used to make sense of the world accurately, but also how they can be incorrectly applied. Consider the following two arguments employing statistical information, and decide if you think the argument is valid. In a survey of terrorist acts that took place over the past five years, approximately 1000 acts of terrorism were identified. 90% of these acts of terrorism were perpetuated by an individual of Muslim faith. We should therefore restrict immigration from Muslim countries because 90% of those immigrants will be terrorists.   There has been a lot of concern about the high rates of divorce seen in America. Some argue that the main cause for divorce is unrealistic expectations on the part of women. Some argue that the main cause for divorce is unrealistic expectations on the part of men. To get to the bottom of this, a poll was taken outside Yoga studios across the country. The results were fairly convincing; out of 4629 people polled, 3935, or 85%, believe that divorce is primarily caused by unrealistic expectations on the part of men. We propose that to promote successful marriage in America, a media campaign should be initiated designed around helping men lower their expectation of their marriage partners.

FURTHER APPLICATIONS

Statistics are often employed to argue a point. Later in this course we will examine how statistics can be used to make sense of the world accurately, but also how they can be incorrectly applied. Consider the following two arguments employing statistical information, and decide if you think the argument is valid.

  • In a survey of terrorist acts that took place over the past five years, approximately 1000 acts of terrorism were identified. 90% of these acts of terrorism were perpetuated by an individual of Muslim faith. We should therefore restrict immigration from Muslim countries because 90% of those immigrants will be terrorists.
