Equations and Inequations
Equations and inequalities describe the relationship between two mathematical expressions.
Linear Functions
A linear function can just be a constant, or it can be the constant multiplied with the variable like x or y. If the variables are of the form, x2, x1/2 or y2 it is not linear. The exponent over the variables should always be 1.

A 550 in. board is cut into 3 pieces. One piece is 10 inch shorter than the middle piece while another piece is three times as long as the middle piece. How long is each piece?
Given:
A 550 in. board is cut into 3 pieces. One piece is 10 inch shorter than the middle piece while another piece is three times as long as the middle piece.
A board is cut into 3 pieces
Suppose x is length of shorter piece,
y is length of middle piece and
z is length of long piece.
length of board is 550 inch
Therefore we get,
x + y + z = 550
One piece is 10 inch shorter than the middle piece
Therefore we get,
x = y - 10
another piece is three times as long as the middle piece
Therefore we get,
z = 3 y
