(C+1) + (H+X-N)/2 

Where C = Number of carbon atoms

H = Number of hydrogen atoms 

X = Number of halogen atoms 

N = Number of hydrogen atoms.

Moreover each π bond and each ring contributs 1 unit to degree of unsaturation.

=> Degree of unsaturation = No. of π bonds + No. of rings.
