Question

Fix the mistakes in the following program so it runs as expected. There are 5 mistakes. All literals (such as 3.5) have the correct value and data type.

// Java program by [Student name] [Today's date]

public class Mistakes {

       public static void main(String[] args) {

              / This is a comment

              int z = 3.5;

              System.out.println("z is + z");

              int s2 = "Michael";

              System.out.println("s2 has the value " s2);

       }

}

Please show the mistakes clearly and how the change is made.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Explanation of all the given errors:

Error 1: the first mistake is that the comments start with //, but in the program code only / is provided.

     Error statement:   / This is a comment

     Rectified statement:  / / This is a comment

   So, replacing / with //.

Error 2: In the program code, the value 3.5 is assigned to an int number.

       Error statement: int z = 3.5;

       Rectified statement: double z = 3.5;

Thus, the error can be rectified by changing the data type from int to double

Error 3: here z need to be displayed to the user, but the z variable is kept inside the quotes because of this the whole statement is displayed to the user as a string.

Error statement: System.out.println("z is + z");

But, here the requirement is to display the value of z to the user. So, to resolve this error removing double quotes given after z and putting it before + .

Rectified statement: System.out.println("z is " + z);

Error 4: a string is declared with the data type int

 Error statement: int s2 = "Michael";

 To resolve the error change int to String data type

 Rectified statement: String s2 = "Michael";

Error 5: In the last statement, the program should display the value of s2 to the user. But it is showing error, due to the missing of + operator

Error statement: System.out.println("s2 has the value " s2);

Rectified statement: System.out.println("s2 has the value " +s2);

So, adding + before the s2 variable will resolve this error.
