Fire is considered one of the biggest hazards in a laboratory and there are four classes of fire. In a scenario where only water is available, name one of the classes of fire during which water is not a suitable distinguisher. Give your reason and suggest a suitable method to put out the fire you have identified.

Expert Solution
Step 1

One of the major possible hazard in laboratory is fire.

It is important to recognize various fires and their extinguishers.

Types of fires:

Class -A fires : The fire caused by combustible paper, plastic, rubber, solid.

Class - B fires : The fire caused by organic solvents like pentane, diethyl ether, hexane, methanol, ethanol, toluene, tetrahydrofuran etc.

The other flammable liquids fires outside the laboratory which comes under class-B are petrol, diesel, gasoline.

Any liquid with flash point of <150C is flammable.

Note : flash point is the temperature at which a liquid produces ignitable vapors.

Class - C fires: Fire from electrical equipment.

Class - D fires: metal and metal hydride fires.
