Explain why the different levels of care are necessary in acute care hospitals,  level one trauma centers and skilled care facilities?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Based on the type of treatment and care they provide, the different types of illness, and the duration of stay, hospitals can be divided into three categories:

  1. Acute Care Hospitals,
  2. Level One Trauma Centers, and
  3. Skilled Care Facilities
Step 2
Acute Care Hospitals

Acute care hospitals provide active but short-term treatment for a patient with severe injuries. They also provide surgery related services and inpatient medical facilities for patients recovering from surgery. The patients are discharged from these hospitals as soon as their condition stabilizes.

Level One Trauma Centers

Trauma Centers are also referred to as the emergency department or the causality department. Severe traumatic cases such as injuries caused during vehicle accidents, burns, accidental falls, etc. are treated in these centers. The level one trauma centers provide complete care for every aspect of an injury. They have medical staff and surgeons available 24 hours and have access to all specialty departments such as neurosurgery, emergency medicine, orthopedic surgery, radiology, plastic surgery, etc. They also have rehabilitation facilities for the patient.

Skilled Care Facilities

Skilled care facilities are nursing homes that provide rehabilitation care, residential care of elderly and disabled people, physical therapy, etc. These facilities are staffed with trained nurses and other health professionals. The patients are expected to stay at the facility for a large duration of time.
