The air at the equator is warm and less dense. This low-density air rises up and cools down during the motion. The denser air then descends down at 30 degrees north or south (subtropics). The downward motion again warms the air, leaving it very dry. The dry air is devoid of humidity and hence does not undergo precipitation.
Dry air that circulates between 30 and 50 degrees north or south (subtropics) is responsible for the formation of deserts in the particular latitude.
