Question

Explain why it is important to the search for life to understand the geologic and biological history of Earth.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The earth's formation is dated back to 4.5 billion years. There are many hypothesis which establishes the formation of the earth, which can be categorized into two major categories, viz., Evolutionary theory and Catastrophic theory. According to the evolutionary theory the sun and the planets formed during the same time gradually. Example of this theory is Nebular Hypothesis of Kant and Laplace. Catastrophic hypothesis states that the sun originated prior to the earth and the other planets by some powerful activity, like that of colliding of two stars. Example of catastrophic hypothesis are, Planetesimal hypothesis by Chamberlin, Gaseous tidal theory by Jeans and Jeffery. However the widely accepted is the recent hypothesis, which supports Nebular hypothesis to some extent.
