Topography affects the formation of soil in various ways. Where the land is flat, the processes of energy exchange and of water inflow occur, so the soil can develop to a characteristic depth. Whereas, where the land slopes steeply, a considerable portion of the rainfall flows downslope over the surface, which is also called runoff, causing erosion. The watershed from the sloping ground brings more moisture and deposits additional sediment in the bottomlands. Soil erosion is the removal of the upper layer of soil; it is a form of soil degradation. The soil loss from farmland may be reflected in reduced crop production. The topography of the land determines the velocity at which surface runoff will occur, which affects the formation of soil.
