Question

Explain why GFR cannot be determined by measuring the
amount of NaCl in the urine.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Glomerular filtration rate or GFR can be defined as the amount of blood that passes through the glomerulus in each minute. The normal GFR is 60 or more. GFR is used to detect the functioning of kidneys.

Step 2

The glomerular filtration rate is altered through the amount of NaCl present in the blood. An increase in NaCl amount in the urine does not indicate the amount of glomerular filtration rate because NaCl is reabsorbed in the collecting ducts of the renal system. Thus, the ultimate amount of NaCl present in the urine depicts the NaCl that comes after reabsorption through the collecting ducts and after the urine passage through the glomerulus. Therefore, the amount of NaCl received by glomerulus is not as same as the amount of NaCl in the urine.
