Mathematically, Whenever a random variable is formed by adding a number of other individual independent random variables, then it's distribution becomes close to the normal distribution. The Larger the number of those individuals random variables, the closer will be the distribution of their sum to normality. For example if you roll a six-sided die many times and add a outcomes, the probability distribution of this sum will approximately be a normal distribution. Note that the die does not have to be fair for the above sum to be normal. In nature, many quantities (such as the heights in a certain population) tend to be normally distributed because of the above reason; i.e., they are the sum of other individuals random variables.
