Explain the term of protonema?
A wide variety of plants is observed in nature. To make their study simpler they have been identified and classified. On basis of body organization, they have been classified as thallophtya (don’t have differentiated plant body) and the plants with differentiated plant body were classified as non-vascular (bryophytes) and vascular (gymnosperms, angiosperms)
Some features of bryophytes are as follows:
These are non-vascular plants.
They consist of liverworts, hornworts and mosses.
They do not possess true root, stem and leaves.
Their life cycle is dominated by gametophytic stage.
Dominant stage of life cycle is haploid.
Plant body is smaller is size.
Function of root like structure is to attach plant body to substratum.
