Explain the epidemiology of candidiasis.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Candidiasis is a type of fungal infection caused by Candida. The most commonly occurring organism is Candida albicans species. Normally the Candida is found on the surface of the skin, like mouth, nose, vagina and hands. But if their growth exceeds the limit or if they penetrate into the circulation, then they cause infection in the host.

Candidiasis that occurs in the mouth is referred to as oropharyngeal candidiasis or thrush. Candida can enter into the circulation and cause infection in the organs like lungs, liver or brain.

Step 2

The epidemiology of candidiasis:

  • The blood stream infected candidiasis is caused by Candida albicans and by other species of Candida.  In such cases, the colonization occurs internal to the body.
  • Cross-infection and nosocomial transmission are also the epidemiologic factors in this infection.
  • Certain species of Candida are resistant to antifungal medications, and therefore are difficult to eradicate.
  • The Candida species are known to produce biofilms that provide a high degree of resistance against the antimicrobial drugs. Biofilms are matrices with microbiological communities where they maintain an organized structure that enable their communication.
