Carbohydrate from food is converted to glucose by digestive enzymes which then enters the bloodstream. The glucose level in the blood is kept at the required levels by two enzymes: insulin and glucagon.
After a meal, when the blood glucose levels increase, the pancreases increase insulin production which increases the cell's uptake of glucose by stimulating glycolysis.
When starving, glucose levels in the blood fall, so the pancreas releases glucagon that signals the cell to release stored glucose by stimulating gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis.
