Question

explain the cause of anaphylaxis and distinguish local
anaphylaxis from anaphylactic shock;

Expert Solution
Step 1

The reactions that are observed in the body when the body's immune system responds abnormally to an antigen for a foreign substance like pollen or any food component is defined as an allergic reaction. The molecule or compound that is responsible for allergic reaction is defined as an allergen.

Step 2

Anaphylaxis which is defined as a hypersensitivity reaction can be caused due to several components. Common causes of anaphylaxis include :

  • Food- The food components which are usually associated with anaphylaxis are shellfish, peanuts, eggs, and dairy products.
  • Medicines- Intake of several drugs like aspirin can also contribute to anaphylaxis.
  • Insect stings- The bee, spider, or wasp strings also contribute to anaphylaxis.

Local anaphylaxis is a response that is provided by the immune system in response to any causal agent like the food component or insect sting while anaphylactic shock is the outcome that might be observed due to severe rapidly propagating anaphylaxis reaction. In anaphylactic shock, the blood pressure and the oxygen levels drop while no such observations are found in anaphylaxis.
