Shock absorbers are an important part of the suspension of a vehicle. The shock absorber is designed to absorb or dampen the compression and rebound of springs and suspensions. They regulate undesired and excess spring motion. Shock absorbers keep the tyres in contact with the road all the time Back in elementary school, we learned about energy more precisely, potential energy and kinetic energy. The law of energy conservation states that energy cannot be generated or destroyed. Potential energy is energy stored and kinetic energy is energy in motion. When you encounter some bump or dip on the ground, the vehicle's suspension and springs shift so that the tyre can stay in contact with the road and absorb the force. The shock absorbers dampen the motion of the springs by transforming the spring's kinetic energy into thermal (heat) energy. This thermal energy is then released into the hydraulic fluid. Shock absorbers are oil-filled cylinders. When the suspension of the car moves, the piston moves up and down the oil-filled cylinder. The up-and-down movement of the piston pushes small quantities of fluid into the orifices (tiny holes) of the piston head. Because only a small amount of fluid is pushed out, this slows down the movement of the suspension and dampens the compression and recovery of the springs. Shock absorbers are also susceptible to velocity. This means that the quicker the springs travel, the more resistance the shock absorber offers.
