Explain principle operation and advantages of 3 level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter compared to conventional 2 level inverter.
A three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is a type of power electronic inverter that is used to convert a DC voltage into a three-phase AC voltage. The principle of operation of a three-level NPC inverter is based on the concept of clamping the voltage at the midpoint of the DC voltage source to a neutral point in order to achieve a higher output voltage with reduced harmonic distortion compared to a conventional two-level inverter.
In a conventional two-level inverter, the output voltage is achieved by switching the DC voltage between the positive and negative rails, resulting in a voltage waveform that contains a high level of harmonic distortion. This can result in increased electromagnetic interference (EMI) and reduced efficiency.
