Explain how the basal layer of the epidermis is nourished.
Explain how the basal layer of the epidermis is nourished.
The human skin comprises three layers: the outermost epidermis, the middle dermis and the innermost subcutaneous tissue.
The epidermal layer is mainly composed of the keratinized, stratified squamous epithelium. It further consists of 4 to 5 sublayers. The part of the skin which has four epidermal layers is called the thin skin. The four layers are: stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, and stratum corneum. The mentioned epidermal layers are arranged in the same order with stratum basale being the deepest and stratum corneum being the most superficial. The part of the skin which forms the thick skin has an additional epidermal layer called stratum lucidum which is present between the stratum corneum and the stratum granulosum.
