Question

Explain Conformations of Acyclic Alkanes—Ethane ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Conformational isomers is a form of stereoisomerism where interconversion of isomers are possible by the rotation referring to a single bond. These isomers are termed as conformational isomers. Rotational energy acts as a barrier in case of single bond rotation. It has to be overcome to interconvert one conformed to another.

Step 2

Conformations of ethane.

Ethane is an organic Chemical. It consists of seven sigma bonds when there is a rotation between the carbon atoms different conformers of ethane are formed.

Now suppose we rotate the CH3 group clockwise at an angle of 60 degrees, there would be a possibility that hydrogen present at the front carbon is close to the hydrogen present at the back carbon. That is eclipsed Confirmation.

Eclipse conformation is the highest energy conformations. Another clockwise rotation at an angle of 60 degrees would lead to staggered conformation.
