Explain Camel Saddles
East across the Red Sea, the camel seat of South Arabia came from the incense trade of the country, and it is still receiving help from all parts of the Arabian Peninsula. This seat puts the passenger behind the hump. It uses a U-shaped pad, called Malawi in Arabic, which provides a cushion, back support, and a barrier to prevent the passenger from slipping. Usually adorned with geometric patterns, Malawi is protected on the side of the camel by a woven strip of goat hair called kfal. This is then tied to the front with a single or double cord with a double-stranded cord usually made of acacia trees. According to Hamood al-Wahiba, a Bedouin camel herder from Oman, this allows for both rides and heavy packing using fur bags hung on each side.
It was probably in Babylon and Assyria that camel customs first came into contact with a horse culture, and the height of the horse in battle may have produced the North Arabia saddle, located at the top of the hump - the best place to fight a spear and a sword. This seat is supported by fur pockets or canvas, one on each side of the hump, filled with grass, palm fiber, or grass that line the back roads of the camel. Focused and close to the camel's head, the rider gets control.
