Explain Bonding Models and AIDS Drugs?
AIDS stands for Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is a chronic life-threatening disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Now, with the discovery of HIV, it came to know that it releases an enzyme HIV proteases and enzymes need substrate to react with and get multiplied by this reaction. Means, to disable the virus 2 things can be done
- Either disable the protease
- Or disable the substrate.
Hence, scientists in the early 1990s, thought that structure of protease can be disabled by using a drug. Then they invented many drugs that disable the HIV protease and hence called protease inhibitors. These drugs were tested first on animals and then on humans. These drugs were not curing AIDS but helped a lot in controlling the production of virus in any human being.
