Explain Biological Friedel–Crafts Reactions ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Charles Friedel and James Crafts developed Friedel-Crafts reactions in 1877. Friedel-Craft alkylation and acylation are the major types of these reactions. The substituent in the Friedel-Craft reaction is attached to the aromatic rings.

Features of Friedel-Craft reactions:

  • In the Friedel-Craft reaction, the process of generating an electrophile occurs, and it will work as a lewis acid as well as coordinate with the halogens.
  • The replacement reaction in which aromatic proton is replaced with the alkyl group is known as Friedel-Craft Alkylation.
  • In the Friedel-Craft alkylation reaction, electrophile will attack the aromatic ring through carbonation.
  • The reaction consists of acyl group addition on the aromatic ring is known as Friedel-craft Acylation.
  • The aromatic ring will be converted into ketone in the Friedel-Craft acylation process.
