Earth is the third planet in the solar system, and also the only planet that can sustain life on it. The primary reason for habitability of life is the interaction between four subsystems of Earth. The atmosphere is the mixture of gases that surrounds the earth. It contains mixture of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, methane, etc. The gases have different function in the earth system dynamics. Greenhouse gases are the ones that are responsible for greenhouse phenomenon on a planet. A few of the major greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxides, etc. Nitrous oxides are naturally produced by bacteria on land. And anthropogenic sources are combustion of fossil fuel, agricultural activities, etc. A natural source of carbon dioxide is the volcanic emissions and an anthropogenic source is combustion of fossil fuel. Volcanic emissions are also natural source of methane. Another natural source of methane is the natural wetlands. And anthropogenic sources are coal mining, combustion of fossil fuel, agricultural activities, etc. Most abundant greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide. And the most potent greenhouse gas is methane to warm the planet. One of the most important greenhouse gas is water vapor. However, we are not concerned about water vapour, because it doesn't influence the warming as much as other gases. Rather it's abundance in the atmosphere is controlled by temperature. The water holding capacity of the atmosphere is regulated by temperature of the atmosphere.
