Describe the physiological consequences of hormone imbalance in a person with diabetes mellitus.
It is a group of metabolic disorders in which the amount of blood sugar increases for a prolonged period of time. It can be due to either the pancreas producing low insulin or they are resistant to the effects of insulin. There are three types of diabetes: type I diabetes, Type II and gestational diabetes. Type I is caused by the failure of beta cells to produce insulin; they are immune mediated in nature in which T cells mediated autoimmune attack leads to the loss of beta cells and thus insulin also. Type II diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance that can involve some defects associated with the insulin receptor. It is due to lifestyle factors and genetics.
