WEEK 29
Living Lights
Deep in the ocean, a fierce sea creature uses an eerie light on its head to get
the attention of its prey, while a shrimp squirts glowing liquid into its enemy's face.
What's going on? It's bioluminescence!
8
Bioluminescence is light that comes from living things. Some insects, such as
fireflies, have it, as do certain fish, especially those that live in the deepest parts of
the ocean. Many soft-bodied animals, such as jellyfish, light up. There are even
some fungi, or mushrooms, that glow in the dark! But why do some living things
have this adaptation?
For some creatures, it helps them survive or reproduce. For example, fireflies
use their lights to find mates. The flashing lights are a kind of code. Each type of
firefly flashes at a different rate. That's how they recognize each other!
Bioluminescence can help other animals hunt for food. Very little sunlight
reaches the deepest parts of the ocean. But there are lights in the darkness! Some
come from fish called anglerfish. The anglerfish has a long spine on the top of its
head. The spine looks a bit like a fishing rod. The tip lights up. When other fish swim
toward the light, the anglerfish opens its huge jaws
and sucks them in!
Lights can also help animals hide or escape
from their enemies. For example, a shrimp that lives
deep in the ocean has a clever trick. When it is
attacked, the shrimp squirts a cloud of glowing ink.
The light confuses its enemy, and the shrimp
escapes to safety!
