time result in the reproductive isolation of two species of closely
related palm.
Finches colonized the Galapagos Islands only once. Within a
single island, many species are derived from a single
colonizing species.
During the last Ice Age, pupfish inhabited large lakes in the
Southwestern United States. As these lakes dried, pupfish
became isolated in small lakes.
Meadowlarks, which are found across the United States, are
divided into Western and Eastern species. The two species are
similar, but behavioral barriers discourage mating
between species.
The Bering Sea land bridge once united Alaska and Russia.
Mammals, such as caribou, traveled across this bridge until sea
levels rose and flooded it.
Giraffes live across the African continent. Differences in the
coat pattern may discourage breeding between northern and
southern populations.
