Question

During the transaction process, does it experience lockout? If so, at what point? Explain.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Yes, Transaction undergoes the locking process.

To achieve ACID properties,  Locking is implemented via lock modes and lock granularity and can choose different Isolation levels for transactions.

Transaction means interaction between client and server with a sequence of actions or operations to satisfy ACID (Atomicity, Concurrency, Insolation, and Durability)  properties.

Lockout or Locking: To achieve concurrency in the database, locking protocols are used. Locking is essential for transaction isolation and it serves to lock the objects which are accessed by a transaction.

Simple Locking Mechanism:

  • When a client action accesses an item within a transaction:
    • If the item is already locked by another transaction then the client will wait until it is released.
    • If the item is not locked then the server locks it and proceeds to the client to access the data.
    • If the server already locked the item for the same transaction then the client proceeds to access it.
  • After the transaction is committed or aborted then the server unlocks all locked items from the transaction.
