Question
Forced Induction – For combustion engines, two main types of forced induction (or pressure
charging) are used: Supercharging and Turbocharging. Both methods compress the inlet charge
substantially above atmospheric pressure before the point of ignition. The compressed charge
will become more dense which will create an increase in power and torque from a similar sized
naturally aspirated engine.
It is worth noting that on high speed vehicles (Formula One) a ram-air effect forced induction can
be achieved using intake tube(s) directed into the on-coming air. This can be seen on race cars
where the intake is above the drivers head for unrestricted flow or on racing motorbikes where
the intake is positioned in the front fairing.
