What would you use a streak plate for?
To obtain the streak of a mineral, rub it against an unglazed porcelain plate. The streak consists of
mineral powder.
How soft does a mineral have to be for you to scratch it with your fingernail?
A fingernail can scratch minerals like talc and gypsum, with a hardness of 2 or lower.
How hard does a mineral have to be for it to scratch a glass plate?
Based on Mohs' scale of 3-5 can scratch a glass plate.
Describe the difference between cleavage and fracture.
Cleavage decribes how a mineral break into flat surfaces. Cleavage is determined by the crystal
structure of the mineral. Fracture describes how a mineral breaks into forms or shapes other than
flat surfaces.
Why is the color not always useful for identifying the mineral?
One reason is that it is hard to distinguish between minerals based on color since it may look
similar. There's also colorless minerals and colors change on the mineral too, so it's not a useful
identification.
