Does the creep strength vary with temperature?
Does the creep strength vary with temperature?
Creep: When a part of any member is subjected to constant stress at high temperature for a long period of time ,it will undergo a slow and permanent deformation called creep.
It generally occurs at high temperature, but can also happen at normal room temperature for materials like lead, glass.
Creep occurs in three stages:
1.Primary creep stage: Deformation in material starts with rapid rate but slows due with time.
2.Secondary creep: Here the deformation is at relatively uniform rate .
3.Tertiary creep: In this stage the deformation occurs at an accelerated creep rate and eventually stops when the material breaks or ruptures.
Due to creep the material of the member undergoes increase in length ,which is dependent on time. This deformation in the member can be very dangerous when the member is in operating conditions.
