Distinguish between the stratum basale and the stratum corneum.
The largest organ of the body, that is, the skin, is made up of three distinct layers; the outer epidermis, the innermost hypodermis, and the central dermis layer. The skin's epidermal layer is made up of squamous epithelial cells, and it is sub-divided into five layers. The stratum basale is the innermost or last layer of the skin's epidermis; it is made up of cuboidal and columnar-shaped epithelial cells which are capable of proliferating and dividing, and the blood vessels of the skin's dermal layer nourish this stratum. In contrast, the stratum corneum is the topmost layer of the skin's epidermis, and it is made up of dead, non-dividing, keratinized epithelial cells that lack a nucleus.
