Woman Whose Children Died in Suicide Attempt Living Quietly April 7, 1986
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ More than a year after surviving a suicide attempt that killed her infant daughter and 4-year-old son and four months after leaving jail, Fumiko Kimura is leading a quiet life.
Mrs. Kimura, 33, who pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the drowning of her son and 6- month-old daughter, spends her time teaching crochet and piano to a community group.
″I’m doing what I can,″ she said in Japanese. ″I want to study crochet and piano more. I practice every day at home.″
She has moved into another residence with her husband, Itsuroku Kimura, 40, a restaurant worker, whose infidelity reportedly drove Mrs. Kimura to attempt suicide. After the tragedy, Kimura said he forgave his wife and wanted her back.
It was on Jan. 29, 1985, that Mrs. Kimura walked into the ocean off Santa Monica beach with her children. She was pulled unconscious from the surf by a pair of teen-agers. Her son Kazutaka and daughter Yuri died.
Attempts at oyako shinju, parent-child suicide, usually are judged less harshly in Japan, where no charges are filed if a parent is considered mentally deranged at the time.
Mrs. Kimura was originally charged with murder and felony child endangering, but defense and prosecution attorneys agreed her mental state was not that of a murderer when she attempted suicide.
The Japanese-American community had established a ″Fumiko Kimura Fair Trial Committee,″ and petitions containing between 25,000 to 30,000 signatures from people urging a lenient sentence were presented to the judge.
He gave Mrs. Kimura credit for time served and good behavior and placed her on five years’ probation.
Now, Mrs. Kimura busies herself at a Japanese-American community center in the San Fernando Valley, instructing her students in crochet stitchery, something she learned from her grandmother while growing up in Japan.
