Discuss the life history of red blood cells
The red blood cell is also called as erythrocyte, considered to be the most abundant type of cell out of the three cell types present in blood. Two million new red blood cells are produced per second approximately. Their function is to carry oxygen to all over the body.
The process of red blood cell production is callled as erythropoeisis. It takes place in the bone marrow of adult humans. The release of hormone called as erythpoietin or EPO signals the formation of red blood cells. The kidney releases this hormone as a result of several conditions like the reduced blood flow to the kidneys, reduced atmospheric or blood oxygen levels and hypotension or reduced blood pressure.
