The Dunhuang caves form the group of various Buddhist caves which are located in the Gansu province in China. The area of Dunhuang is a type of oasis that is primarily filled with the religious establishments of Buddhism and Hinduism. There are several temples located in this area also. The caves containing Buddhist art are one of the finest architectural brilliance in the history of Buddhism.
These places serve as the places of meditation and worship for the Buddhist monks and disciples. The caves are well known for the Chinese Buddhist Grottoes. The caves are primarily formed by the cuttings of the rocks and providing them proper shape.
There is wide use of mural paintings inside the cave. The paintings are depicted all over the walls and ceilings of the caves. There is the use of various figurative images along with the image of the Buddha. The spaces which are left empty from the figures are filled with plant decorations and geometrical images. The mural paintings are very rich and colorful depicting the artistic brilliance of its painters. The major subjects of painting were related to Buddhism.
