Discrimination is treating people or a group of people differently or negatively because they belong to a particular section, caste, gender, etc. It includes not giving them a fair opportunity or depriving them of various choices which are otherwise available to other people. Prejudice is having a negative thought process or a negative attitude toward certain people or groups in society, but their prejudice does not lead to any differential treatment of individuals. Discriminating against people on the basis of gender, class, gender, etc. is illegal because it directly causes harm to other people. In contrast, prejudice is a perception of the individuals and is not illegal because it is in the minds of the individuals and does not directly harm anyone.
