Directions: Read the case scenario and complete the iceberg visual. At the top of the iceberg, list what behaviors you see. At the bottom of the iceberg, list what you wonder or possible things about Maria you don’t know. How would you address the bottom of the iceberg? What would you want to do or how would you work with Maria’s family to learn more? Maria is three years old and a student in your classroom. You noticed the first thing in the morning when she arrived at school, she wasn’t her typical self, something seemed “off”. Maria socialized with a few of her friends and after some time stopped sharing and started yelling, “MINE, give it to me now” as she grabbed a toy from her friend. You approached Maria to talk with her about what happened, and she gave you a scowl look and stuck her tongue out at you. “I’m mad”, she declared, “I don’t like you”. Maria walked away and played by herself. Things seemed calm so you let her be. When it was time for a snack, Maria was disruptive and took food from her friend’s plate. She threw the food at another friend and had difficulty sitting in her chair. She yelled, “This food is gross, I want a cookie”. Again, you approach Maria and ask her to follow you to the calm corner and she goes, reluctantly, and throws the remaining food in her hand at you. While in the corner, Maria asks for a blanket and you tell her it’s not time for a blanket and nap. Maria starts to cry and begs you for a blanket. You give in, handing Maria her naptime blanket, and walk away. While alone with her blanket, Maria falls asleep and you are happy that things are calm and quiet.
