It is important to be able to describe the details of a chemical reaction. One
way of doing this is to use words.
Activity 1. Translate Me
Direction:
Write the chemical equation for the following word equations. Use the
symbols/formula inside the box to answer this activity. Periodic Table of elements
can also be used to help you answer the activity.
Key word representation: This would help you determine the words used in
an equation. An oxidation number/oxidation state determines the total
number of electrons that an atom either gains or loses in order to form a
chemical bond. This will become the subscript of an element in a compound
using the criss cross method.
Key word representation:
Symbol and formula used:
Word
Symbol used
Ag- silver
O2 - oxygen
React
Ba 2+ - barium
N2 - nitrogen
And
Cu 2+ - copper
CO2 - carbon dioxide
Produce
Na'- sodium
H2O - water
Yield
Mg 2* - magnesium
H2O2 - hydrogen
Form
peroxide
Decompose
N 3- - nitride
CHa - propane
NOg-nitrate
co.- carbonate

Word Equation: Aluminum reacts with chlorine to form aluminum chloride.
Chemical Equation: Al + Cl2 - AICla
Explanation: Aluminum has an oxidation number of 3* while chlorine is a di-
atomic element which has always a subscript of 2 when it is not bonded with other
element and has 1- as its oxidation number. Using the criss cross method, their
oxidation numbers change as a subscript to each element that is why it becomes
AlCla. If the subscript is only 1 there is no need to write because it's understood
that it has 1.
Al C criss cross method
AICI,
1.
Magnesium reacts with nitrogen to produce magnesium nitride.
2.
Hydrogen peroxide must be kept in an opaque container because when it is
exposed to light, it decomposes to form water and oxygen.
3.
Silver (1) nitrate reacts with copper to form copper (II) nitrate and silver.
4.
Propane + oxygen gas - carbon dioxide gas + water vapor
Sodium carbonate + barium nitrate - sodium nitrate + barium carbonate
5.
Nice one guys! You're doing great. Let's do the next activity.
